- Unexpected equipment movement
- Struck-by hazards in active work zones
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Driving near heavy equipment requires caution from utility crews, contractors, municipal employees, and fleet operators. Excavators, loaders, cranes, and other equipment often have limited visibility and large blind spots.
Drivers should reduce speed, maintain safe distance, and avoid passing equipment unless directed by the operator or spotter. Equipment may swing, reverse, or reposition unexpectedly during active operations.
Different job sites create different challenges. Construction projects may involve multiple machines operating simultaneously, utility crews often work in narrow roadside areas, and industrial facilities may combine heavy equipment with pedestrian traffic.
Clear communication between drivers, spotters, and operators is essential. Workers should never assume equipment operators can see approaching vehicles.
Safety Reminders
- Slow down near heavy equipment.
- Stay out of equipment blind spots.
- Follow spotter directions carefully.
- Never assume operators can see your vehicle.
Ask the Crew
- What heavy equipment will be operating nearby today?
- Do we need designated travel routes around equipment?
