Drones are useful for inspecting power lines, substations, poles, and electrical equipment, but the work combines aviation hazards with potentially fatal electrical exposure.
Conductors, guy wires, shield wires, and smaller service lines can be difficult to see, especially through a wide-angle camera or against cluttered backgrounds. The pilot should not depend on the screen alone to judge clearance.
The planned flight path should use conservative separation from energized parts and account for wind, gusts, control delay, positioning error, and unexpected aircraft movement. Minimum company or utility clearances should always be followed.
Structures and lines can create turbulent air. A drone that appears stable at one position may drift suddenly when it moves around a pole, tower, transformer, building edge, or conductor corridor.
Electrical infrastructure and large metal structures may affect compass readings, navigation, or communication. Warnings, unexpected drift, or abnormal control response should be treated as reasons to increase separation or land.
The operation should be coordinated with the utility owner and affected crews. Switching status, energized conditions, grounding, line work, bucket trucks, and other activities can change the hazards during the flight.
No worker should climb, use a pole, enter a restricted electrical area, or reach toward energized equipment to recover a drone. Retrieval should be handled only through the utility’s approved electrical safety procedures.
If the drone contacts a line or electrical component, the area should be treated as energized and unsafe until the responsible utility authority confirms otherwise.
