Key Hazards

  • Thrown rocks, sticks, wire, or debris

  • Slips or rollovers on slopes and uneven ground
  • Noise, dust, and flying debris exposure
  • Fueling and fire hazards
  • Pedestrians, vehicles, or coworkers entering the work area

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Mowers and trimmers can cause serious injuries because they use high-speed blades or rotating cutting heads. The hazards include thrown objects, cuts, noise, dust, fuel, traffic, and uneven terrain.

Equipment should be inspected before use. Guards, shields, blades, handles, wheels, belts, fuel lines, controls, and shutoff switches should be checked before the work begins.

The work area should be inspected for debris. Rocks, wire, glass, sticks, cans, metal, toys, and trash can become projectiles when struck by a mower blade or trimmer head.

PPE should be worn for the task. Eye protection, hearing protection, sturdy footwear, long pants, gloves, and high-visibility clothing may be needed depending on the work location.

Workers should keep bystanders, pedestrians, vehicles, and coworkers away from the discharge path and trimming area. Thrown objects can travel farther than expected.

Slopes and uneven ground require caution. Operators should follow safe mowing practices for the type of equipment being used and avoid areas where the machine could slide, tip, or roll.

Fueling should be done safely. Equipment should be shut off, allowed to cool when needed, and fueled away from ignition sources. Spills should be cleaned up before restarting.

Safe mower and trimmer use depends on inspection, area control, PPE, and steady operation. Rushing or bypassing guards can turn routine landscaping into a serious injury.

Safety Reminders

  • Inspect mowers and trimmers before use.
  • Keep guards, shields, and safety devices in place.
  • Clear rocks, sticks, wire, and debris before cutting.
  • Wear eye, hearing, foot, and leg protection as needed.
  • Keep people away from the discharge and trimming area.
  • Use caution on slopes and uneven ground.
  • Refuel safely and clean up spills.

Ask the Crew

  • Has the equipment been inspected before use?
  • Are guards and shields in place?
  • Has the area been cleared of debris that could be thrown?
  • Are pedestrians, vehicles, and coworkers kept away from the cutting area?
  • What PPE is needed for mowing or trimming today?
