2–3 Minute Talk Script

Ground maintenance work can involve many changing hazards. Workers may deal with equipment, traffic, heat, insects, uneven ground, hidden debris, and public interaction during the same task.

The work area should be inspected before maintenance begins. Rocks, wire, glass, sticks, holes, utility lids, irrigation parts, and debris can cause trips or become projectiles.

Powered equipment such as mowers, trimmers, edgers, blowers, and chainsaws should be inspected before use. Guards, shields, blades, handles, fuel systems, cords, and shutoff controls should be checked.

Thrown objects are a major hazard. Workers should keep people, vehicles, windows, and coworkers away from discharge paths and trimming areas.

Terrain matters. Slopes, ditches, wet grass, mud, roots, uneven ground, holes, and curbs can cause slips, falls, or equipment loss of control.

Weather and heat exposure should be managed. Water, shade, breaks, sunscreen, and adjusted work pace may be needed during hot or sunny conditions.

Ground maintenance near roads, sidewalks, entrances, and parking lots may require high-visibility clothing, cones, signage, or spotters to protect workers from traffic and pedestrians.

Safe ground maintenance depends on inspecting the area, controlling equipment hazards, maintaining visibility, and adjusting the work when conditions change.

Safety Reminders

  • Inspect the work area for debris and hidden hazards.
  • Check equipment before use.
  • Keep guards and shields in place.
  • Keep people clear of discharge and cutting areas.
  • Watch footing on slopes, wet grass, mud, and uneven ground.
  • Manage heat, sun, and hydration.
  • Use traffic control or high-visibility clothing when needed.

Ask the Crew
