Key Hazards

  • Contact with the rotating cutting wheel
  • Thrown wood chips, rocks, dirt, or metal debris
  • Striking underground utilities, irrigation, or buried objects
  • Machine movement on slopes, soft ground, or uneven terrain
  • Noise, vibration, dust, and flying debris exposure
  • Bystanders entering the grinding area

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Stump grinders are powerful machines designed to remove wood with a rotating cutting wheel. That wheel can throw debris and cause severe injuries if the area is not controlled.

Workers should inspect the stump grinder before use. Cutting wheel, teeth, guards, controls, tires or tracks, hydraulics, belts, fuel system, and emergency stop should be checked.

The work area should be inspected before grinding. Rocks, wire, metal, fencing, roots, sprinkler heads, underground utilities, and debris can create hazards.

Underground utilities should be located as required before grinding begins. The grinder can strike shallow utilities or buried objects near the stump.

Workers should keep bystanders, pedestrians, pets, vehicles, and coworkers outside the debris zone. Shields, cones, or barriers may be needed.

PPE should include eye and face protection, hearing protection, gloves, sturdy footwear, and other protection based on the machine and site conditions.

Footing and terrain matter. Slopes, soft soil, mud, holes, roots, and uneven ground can affect machine control.

Safe stump grinder use depends on inspection, utility awareness, debris control, proper PPE, stable machine positioning, and stopping immediately if something unexpected is struck.

Safety Reminders

  • Inspect the stump grinder before use.
  • Check the area for rocks, metal, wire, and debris.
  • Locate underground utilities when required.
  • Keep bystanders out of the debris zone.
  • Wear eye, face, hearing, hand, and foot protection.
  • Use caution on slopes and uneven ground.
  • Stop if the grinder strikes something unexpected.

Ask the Crew

  • Has the stump and surrounding area been inspected?
  • Could underground utilities or buried objects be present?
  • Is the grinder in safe operating condition?
  • Are bystanders and vehicles clear of the debris zone?
  • What PPE is required for this grinding task?
