Scaffold Inspection Before Use requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.
A competent person should inspect the scaffold before each work shift and after weather, impact, alteration, movement, or any event that could affect its structural integrity.
Base plates, mud sills, casters, legs, frames, posts, and supporting surfaces should be stable, level, plumb, and free from settlement or damage.
Cross bracing, pins, couplers, ties, guys, outriggers, and other structural components should be installed and secured as required for the scaffold type and height.
Platforms should be fully and properly planked, free from dangerous gaps and damage, and kept clear of debris, ice, excessive material, and trip hazards.
Access ladders, stairs, gates, guardrails, midrails, toeboards, and fall-protection systems should be complete and usable before the scaffold is released for work.
The inspection should confirm load limits, clearance from electrical hazards, protection from vehicle contact, and controls for falling objects and weather exposure.
The scaffold should be tagged or otherwise kept out of service when components are missing, the base has shifted, planks are damaged, protection is incomplete, or the competent person has not approved its use.
