Metal Decking Installation Safety requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.
The decking plan should define bundle weights and landing points, joist readiness, hoisting methods, fall protection, initial attachments, sheet sequence, openings, weather limits, and end-of-shift securing.
Deck bundles should be hoisted with approved lifting methods and landed only on framing verified to support the weight and placement.
Sheets should be fully supported during initial placement and secured promptly so wind, foot traffic, or movement of adjacent sheets cannot displace them.
Workers should use planned fall protection and avoid stepping on unsecured sheets, unsupported edges, concealed openings, or areas where decking does not fit tightly around columns.
Sharp edges, straps, cutoffs, screws, and welding or cutting operations should be controlled with suitable gloves, eye protection, hot-work controls, and orderly handling.
Openings should be framed, covered, marked, or guarded as required, and bundles or loose sheets should be secured whenever work stops or conditions change.
Decking work should stop when wind moves sheets, joist bridging or attachment is incomplete, landing locations are uncertain, openings are unprotected, or fall protection cannot advance with the work.
