Key Hazards
- Contact with rotating blades or cutting mechanisms
- Flying chips, sticks, rocks, or debris
- Clogs causing sudden kickback or unexpected movement
- Electric shock from damaged cords or wet conditions
- Hands or tools inserted into feed chutes
- Noise, dust, and eye exposure during mulching
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Electric mulchers can reduce yard waste, but they use fast-moving cutting parts that can cause serious injuries. The feed chute, discharge area, cord, and blade system all need attention.
Workers should inspect the mulcher before use. Guards, feed chute, discharge chute, blades, cords, plugs, switches, wheels, and housing should be in safe condition.
Hands should never be placed into the feed chute, discharge chute, or cutting area. A push tool should only be used if it is designed and approved for that equipment.
Material should be fed gradually. Wet leaves, vines, long branches, and oversized debris can clog the machine or cause sudden movement.
The area around the mulcher should be checked for rocks, wire, metal, glass, or other debris that could damage blades or become projectiles.
Electrical safety matters. Outdoor-rated cords, GFCI protection, dry connections, and protection from cord damage should be used where required.
The machine should be shut off and disconnected from power before clearing clogs, inspecting blades, or making adjustments.
Safe electric mulcher use depends on controlled feeding, keeping hands out of the machine, protecting against flying debris, and disconnecting power before clearing jams.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the mulcher before use.
- Keep hands out of feed and discharge chutes.
- Feed material slowly and in manageable amounts.
- Remove rocks, wire, metal, and debris before mulching.
- Use outdoor-rated cords and GFCI protection when required.
- Wear eye, hearing, and hand protection as needed.
- Disconnect power before clearing clogs or making adjustments.
Ask the Crew
- Is the mulcher in safe condition before use?
- Is the material too wet, large, or tangled to feed safely?
- Could debris become a projectile?
- Are cords and electrical connections protected?
- Has power been disconnected before clearing clogs?
