Steel Joist and Column Stability Safety requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.
The erection drawings and site-specific plan should identify column anchorage, stabilizer requirements, joist connections, bridging sequence, crane-release criteria, construction-load limits, and fall-protection methods.
Columns should be set on verified foundations and anchor-rod assemblies and should receive required temporary stability measures before adjacent framing is erected.
Steel joists should be connected, stabilized, and bridged in the required sequence so they cannot rotate, roll, or collapse under workers or construction loads.
Hoisting cables should remain attached until the member has the required bolts, welds, bridging, or other connections and the erection crew confirms stability.
Decking bundles, bridging, tools, and other construction loads should be placed only where the structure and individual joists are verified to support them.
Field cutting, welding, relocation of bridging, or modification of joists, columns, and anchor rods should occur only with required engineering or qualified-person approval.
Work should stop when anchorage is damaged, joists rotate, bridging is incomplete, an unplanned load is introduced, or the crew cannot verify structural stability before release.
